Cultural and Linguistic Influences on Our Perception of Reality

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, is often seen as a reflection of our collective knowledge and understanding of the world. But how do different cultures and languages shape our perception of reality? A new study has used mathematical analysis to investigate the relationships between society concepts and religions across eight Wikipedia language editions.

The researchers used a technique called the Google matrix, which maps the connections between web pages based on their links. In this case, they applied the same principle to 40 articles related to society concepts and religions in each of the eight languages. The results show that while there are some common themes and patterns across cultures, there are also significant differences.

For example, the concept of law is highly ranked in English-language Wikipedia articles, but not as prominent in Arabic or Chinese editions. Similarly, Christianity is a dominant theme in English and French language articles, but plays a smaller role in Russian or Italian ones. The study also found that certain concepts, such as communism and capitalism, are often linked together in Western languages, while in Asian cultures they are more likely to be seen as separate entities.

The researchers used the reduced Google matrix algorithm to analyze the connections between the article entries. This allowed them to identify patterns of influence and interaction between different society concepts and religions. They found that the two blocks of society concepts and religions tend to decouple, with fewer transitions between them than within each block.

One of the most striking findings is the difference in how different cultures view the role of religion in society. While Christianity is a dominant theme in many Western languages, it plays a smaller role in Asian cultures, where Buddhism, Hinduism and Chinese folk religion are more prominent. The study also found that certain concepts, such as Islam and Judaism, are often linked together in Arabic language articles.

The researchers hope that their findings will shed new light on how different cultures shape our understanding of the world. By analyzing the connections between society concepts and religions, they aim to provide a better understanding of how our perceptions of reality are influenced by cultural and linguistic factors.
