Unlocking Higher-Speed Optical Data Transmission: A Novel Pre-Compensation Scheme for Cost-Sensitive IM/DD Systems

Scientists have made a significant breakthrough in developing a new technology that can improve the performance of high-speed data transmission systems. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize the way we communicate and access information.


The technology, known as pre-compensation, is designed to combat two major problems that occur when transmitting high-speed data over long distances: bandwidth limitation and fiber dispersion. Bandwidth limitation occurs when the signal being transmitted exceeds the capacity of the transmission medium, causing distortion and errors. Fiber dispersion, on the other hand, occurs when different wavelengths of light travel at different speeds through the fiber-optic cable, also causing distortion and errors.


The new pre-compensation technology works by adding an equalization filter to the transmission system that compensates for both bandwidth limitation and fiber dispersion. This allows the signal to be transmitted more efficiently and accurately over longer distances, without the need for additional hardware or complex processing.


To test the effectiveness of this technology, scientists conducted experiments using a high-speed data transmission system with a 3-dB bandwidth of 9 GHz. The results showed that the pre-compensation technology improved the receiver sensitivity of the signal by up to 2 dB at the HD-FEC threshold, compared to traditional methods.


One of the key benefits of this technology is its ability to improve the performance of data transmission systems without requiring significant changes to existing infrastructure. This makes it a cost-effective solution for upgrading high-speed data transmission networks.
