Accurate Brain Tumor Surgery Challenge: ReMIND2Reg 2025

Friday 12 September 2025

A team of researchers has developed a new challenge aimed at improving the accuracy of brain tumor surgery. The ReMIND2Reg 2025 Challenge is an ambitious project that brings together experts in medical imaging, computer science, and neurosurgery to tackle one of the most complex problems in medicine: accurately registering preoperative MRI scans with post-resection intraoperative ultrasound images.

The challenge lies in the fact that brain tumors are highly variable and can shift significantly during surgery. This makes it difficult for surgeons to accurately locate the tumor and remove as much of it as possible while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. Current methods rely on imperfect registration between preoperative MRI scans and intraoperative ultrasound images, which can lead to errors and reduce the effectiveness of surgery.

The ReMIND2Reg 2025 Challenge aims to overcome this limitation by providing a large dataset of paired MRI and ultrasound images from patients with brain tumors. The dataset includes 99 training cases, 5 validation cases, and 10 private test cases, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive datasets in its field.

The challenge is designed to encourage the development of novel registration algorithms that can accurately align preoperative MRI scans with post-resection intraoperative ultrasound images. The goal is to create a system that can provide surgeons with accurate and reliable information about the location and extent of brain tumors during surgery, enabling them to make more informed decisions and improve patient outcomes.

To achieve this, the challenge includes several evaluation metrics, including target registration error (TRE), which measures the accuracy of registration, and robustness to worst-case landmark misalignment (TRE30), which assesses an algorithm’s ability to perform well even when faced with errors. The challenge also encourages participants to use a variety of imaging modalities and algorithms, making it more challenging but also more realistic.

The ReMIND2Reg 2025 Challenge has the potential to revolutionize brain tumor surgery by providing surgeons with better tools to locate and remove tumors accurately. By bringing together experts from different fields, the challenge aims to accelerate the development of new registration algorithms that can improve patient outcomes and reduce the risk of complications during surgery.

The challenge is now open for participation, and researchers are encouraged to join forces to tackle this complex problem. The outcome could be a significant improvement in brain tumor surgery, enabling more accurate and effective treatments for patients with these devastating diseases.
