A study has revealed that multinational corporations are dominating global economic ties, forming connections between cities across the world. The researchers analyzed networks of cities formed by owner-subsidiary links of multinational firms and identified patterns of connectivity.
The study found that distant connections between cities are more common than previously thought, with many cities forming ties with other cities in different regions. This trend is observed consistently across all major economic hubs, including New York, Paris, London, and Tokyo.
One of the key findings is that inter-regional ties dominate hybrid regional and intra-regional ties. This suggests that multinational corporations are prioritizing connections between cities in different regions over those within their own region or country.
The study also found that cities with strong economic ties tend to have a higher percentage of international connections, while cities with weaker economic ties have more local connections. This highlights the importance of global connectivity for economic growth and development.
The researchers used network motifs, which are small patterns of nodes and edges in networks, to analyze the data. They identified seven different configurations of motifs, including inter-regional, hybrid regional, and intra-regional ties.
The study’s findings have implications for urban planning and economic development strategies. Cities may need to focus on building international connections to stay competitive in a global economy.
