A team of researchers has developed a writing evaluation system that can assess student essays and provide feedback on revisions, helping them improve their argumentative writing skills.
The system, called eRevise+RF, uses natural language processing (NLP) to analyze student essays and identify areas for improvement. It provides feedback on the use of evidence in arguments, as well as suggestions for revising the essay to make it more effective.
In a study published recently, the researchers tested eRevise+RF with 6 teachers and 406 students across three schools in Pennsylvania and Louisiana. The results showed that the system was able to assess student essays accurately and provide helpful feedback on revisions.
One of the key features of eRevise+RF is its ability to identify relevant evidence in student essays and suggest ways to improve its use. For example, if a student uses an anecdote to support their argument, but doesn’t explain how it relates to the topic, eRevise+RF can point out this weakness and suggest ways to strengthen the essay.
The system also provides feedback on the clarity of student writing, suggesting changes to make the text more readable and concise. Additionally, eRevise+RF can identify areas where students are struggling with argumentation and provide guidance on how to improve their reasoning skills.
Teachers using eRevise+RF reported that it helped them identify areas where students needed extra support, allowing them to target their instruction more effectively. Students also found the feedback helpful, saying it made them think more critically about their writing and helped them to revise their essays more effectively.
The researchers believe that eRevise+RF has the potential to improve student outcomes in argumentative writing, which is an important skill for students to develop in order to succeed in academics and beyond. By providing teachers with a tool to assess and guide student writing, eRevise+RF can help students develop their writing skills more effectively and achieve better results.
