Researchers have made significant progress in developing a more accurate and robust lip-reading system, which could revolutionize communication for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The new system, developed by a team of scientists, uses a combination of advanced computer algorithms and synthetic data to improve the accuracy of lip-reading models. The researchers used a speech-driven diffusion model to generate high-quality animated portraits that mimic real-life facial expressions. These animations were then paired with audio clips from existing datasets to create a diverse range of lip movement videos.
The team also introduced an auxiliary task, known as viseme classification, which involves classifying different mouth shapes and movements into distinct categories. This added layer of complexity helps the model better understand the nuances of speech and improves its ability to recognize words and phrases.
One of the key innovations behind this system is a temporal attention fusion module that allows the model to focus on specific parts of the video sequence when making predictions. This enables the model to accurately identify lip movements even in situations where there are distractions or variations in facial expressions.
The researchers tested their system using a dataset of 500 distinct words and found that it outperformed existing models by a significant margin. The system achieved an accuracy of 92.8%, compared to around 88% for the best previous model.
