The T Tauri triple system, located about 143 light-years away in the constellation of Taurus, has been a fascinating subject of study for astronomers. Comprising three stars, including one visible to the naked eye, this complex system has long been known for its irregular variability. Recently, observations have revealed that the brightest star in the system, T Tau N, has undergone significant dimming events over the past decade.
T Tau N’s brightness fluctuations were first documented in the 19th century, but a more detailed analysis of its behavior was made possible by the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO). The organization’s database contains thousands of observations from amateur and professional astronomers worldwide. By analyzing these data, researchers have identified a pattern of dimming events that began around 2015.
The dimming is not a simple case of random variability; instead, it appears to be related to changes in the amount of material along our line of sight to T Tau N. This material, known as circumstellar dust and gas, is thought to originate from the system’s inner disk and is responsible for blocking some of the star’s light.
Further investigation has revealed that the dimming is not just a result of random variations in the dust distribution. Instead, it seems to be connected to the wide-scale orbital motion of the T Tau Sa+Sb binary around T Tau N. As this binary system moves through its orbit, it carries with it a circumbinary ring of material that gradually blocks our view of T Tau N.
This phenomenon is not unique to T Tauri; similar effects have been observed in other young star systems. However, the T Tauri triple system’s proximity and relative brightness make it an ideal laboratory for studying these events up close. By analyzing the dimming patterns and orbital motion of the system, researchers can gain valuable insights into the formation and evolution of stars and their surrounding environments.
As T Tau N continues to dim and brighten in response to its changing line of sight, astronomers will have the opportunity to study this phenomenon in unprecedented detail. With new observations and data analysis techniques at their disposal, they may be able to uncover even more secrets about the complex interplay between stars, dust, and gas that shapes our understanding of the universe.
