A sudden and dramatic shift has been observed in the behavior of a distant galaxy, sending shockwaves through the scientific community. Markarian 590, a quasar located about 115 million light-years away, has undergone a transformation from a dimmer, less active state to a brighter, more energetic one.
Quasars are incredibly luminous objects that are thought to be powered by supermassive black holes at their centers. These black holes are surrounded by accretion disks, which are swirling clouds of hot gas that emit intense radiation as they spiral towards the event horizon. The sudden change in Markarian 590’s behavior suggests that the black hole at its center has experienced a significant increase in its accretion rate, causing it to become more active and luminous.
The transformation was first detected by NASA’s Swift satellite, which monitors the X-ray emissions from quasars across the universe. The satellite picked up an unexpected surge in X-ray radiation coming from Markarian 590, indicating that something dramatic had happened at its center.
Further investigation revealed that the galaxy’s ultraviolet (UV) light output had also increased significantly, suggesting that the accretion disk was becoming more massive and hot. This, in turn, would have triggered a chain reaction of events, including the heating up of the surrounding gas and the creation of new stars.
The research team behind this discovery used a combination of observations from different telescopes to study Markarian 590’s behavior. They analyzed data collected by the Swift satellite, as well as optical and infrared spectra obtained with the Faulkes Telescope South in Chile. By comparing these datasets, they were able to reconstruct the history of the galaxy’s activity over several years.
The findings suggest that Markarian 590’s transformation was a sudden event, occurring within a matter of months. This rapid change is likely due to an increase in the black hole’s accretion rate, which could be caused by a variety of factors such as changes in the surrounding gas or the injection of new material into the disk.
The study provides valuable insights into the behavior of quasars and the role they play in shaping the evolution of galaxies. Quasars are thought to have played a crucial part in the formation of many galaxies, including our own Milky Way, by injecting energy and heavy elements into their surroundings.
