New Research Suggests Building Blocks of Life May Have Formed Differently Than Previously Thought

The building blocks of life may have formed in a very different way than scientists previously thought, according to new research. A team of astronomers has discovered that complex organic molecules can be created through the irradiation of water and methane ices, rather than requiring the presence of specific prebiotic molecules.


For decades, scientists have been trying to understand how the raw materials of life emerged on Earth. One key mystery is how simple molecules like carbon dioxide and water gave rise to more complex structures like amino acids and sugars. To tackle this challenge, researchers have simulated conditions in space using laboratory experiments and computer models.


In these simulations, scientists typically start with a mixture of prebiotic molecules – such as hydrogen cyanide, formamide, and other chemical building blocks – which are then exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation or high-energy particles. However, this approach has its limitations. For example, it’s unclear whether these prebiotic molecules actually existed in the early solar system.


The new research takes a different approach. Scientists created a mixture of water ice and methane, which is common in comets and asteroids, and then subjected it to UV radiation similar to that found in space. They found that this combination produced complex organic compounds, including some that are identical to those found in meteorites and on Earth.


These findings suggest that the raw materials of life may have been more widespread than previously thought, and that the process of forming complex molecules could be more straightforward than scientists had assumed. This has significant implications for our understanding of how life emerged on Earth, and potentially elsewhere in the universe.


The researchers also discovered that the formation of these complex molecules is linked to the presence of dust traps in protoplanetary disks – regions where particles are stuck due to gravitational forces. These dust traps could have played a crucial role in concentrating the necessary materials for life to emerge.


While this research does not provide definitive answers, it opens up new avenues for scientists to explore. By studying the formation of complex organic molecules in these dust traps, researchers may be able to better understand how life emerged on our planet and potentially elsewhere in the universe.
