WALLABY Pilot Survey: Unveiling the Secrets of Galaxy Evolution

The WALLABY Pilot Survey has yielded some fascinating results, providing a glimpse into the structure and behavior of galaxies in the distant universe. By analyzing the distribution of atomic hydrogen (HI) within these galaxies, researchers have been able to identify perturbed systems that are likely undergoing tidal interactions or ram-pressure stripping.


To accomplish this feat, the team employed a k-nearest neighbor (kNN) algorithm, which relies on a set of six HI morphometric features. These features include metrics such as concentration-asymmetry-smoothness, Gini, M20, and Sersic fit. By training the kNN classifier on a sample of labeled galaxies, the researchers were able to develop a robust system for identifying perturbed systems.


The WALLABY Pilot Survey is a precursor to a larger project aimed at mapping the neutral hydrogen gas in the universe. This survey has already provided valuable insights into the properties of galaxies and their interactions with their surroundings. The use of HI as a probe of galaxy evolution offers several advantages over traditional methods, such as optical spectroscopy.


One of the key findings of this study is that perturbed systems are more common than previously thought. The team’s analysis suggests that a significant fraction of galaxies in the distant universe are experiencing some form of tidal interaction or ram-pressure stripping.
