For decades, astronomers have been fascinated by a type of star known as WZ Sge stars, which are highly evolved binary systems that exhibit dramatic outbursts. These events can make the stars brighter by millions of times, and scientists believe they are caused by a sudden surge in material flowing from one star to another.
Now, a team of researchers has made a remarkable discovery about these enigmatic stars. By studying the light emitted by one particular WZ Sge star, known as GOTO 0650, they have detected a periodic signal that is thought to be the spin period of the white dwarf at its heart.
The white dwarf is a small, extremely hot star that has exhausted its fuel supply and has shrunk to about the size of the Earth. It is spinning rapidly on its axis, completing one rotation every 148 seconds. This spin period is a key clue to understanding the physics of these binary systems.
WZ Sge stars are unique because they have very low magnetic fields compared to other similar stars. In fact, their magnetic fields are so weak that they do not dominate the behavior of the system as they would in more typical binary stars.
The detection of the spin period in GOTO 0650 is significant because it suggests that the star’s magnetic field may play a crucial role in controlling its outbursts. This could help scientists understand why these events occur and how they are linked to the properties of the white dwarf and the surrounding disk of material.
The discovery was made possible by observations from three different telescopes: the Zwicky Transient Facility, the All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae, and the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional on the Sierra San Pedro Mártir. The data were analyzed using sophisticated software that allowed the researchers to tease out the subtle signal buried in the light curves.
The finding has important implications for our understanding of these extreme binary systems. It suggests that GOTO 0650 is a WZ Sge star with a slowly spinning white dwarf, which is different from other similar stars where the spin period is much faster.
The research also highlights the importance of continued observations of these enigmatic stars. By monitoring their behavior over time, scientists can gain valuable insights into the underlying physics and potentially uncover new clues about the nature of these binary systems.
In the future, astronomers may be able to use this newfound understanding to study other WZ Sge stars in greater detail, potentially revealing even more secrets about these fascinating objects.
