The Bitcoin blockchain, once a simple ledger for tracking transactions, has evolved into a complex ecosystem of decentralized finance (DeFi) and token issuance. A new attack has been discovered that targets this system, threatening to disrupt the fairness and security of transactions.
The BRC20 sniping attack exploits a weakness in the way transactions are prioritized on the blockchain, allowing an attacker to manipulate fees and complete their own transactions before others. This can lead to unfair outcomes, where some users’ transactions are replaced or delayed by those with higher fees.
The attack works by creating a partially signed transaction (PSBT) that is broadcast to the network with a high fee. The PSBT is then completed using a commitment scheme, which ensures that the transaction cannot be altered once it has been partially signed. This allows the attacker to control the order in which transactions are processed, giving them an unfair advantage.
The vulnerability was discovered by researchers who analyzed the behavior of miners and the way they prioritize transactions on the blockchain. They found that certain types of transactions, such as those with high fees or complex logic, are more likely to be prioritized over others.
To mitigate this attack, several measures can be taken. One approach is to add a mempool protection mechanism, which prevents attackers from creating PSBTs with high fees. Another solution is to increase fees after submission, making it more difficult for attackers to complete their transactions before others.
The discovery of the BRC20 sniping attack highlights the importance of continued research and development in the field of blockchain security. As DeFi and token issuance continue to grow, new vulnerabilities will likely emerge, requiring innovative solutions to protect the integrity of the system.
Bitcoin’s historical prices have also been influenced by events such as the creation of the BRC20 token standard and the halving event. The chart shows a clear correlation between transaction fees and daily transactions, with spikes in activity coinciding with significant events on the network.
