Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense, and a new study suggests that India is particularly vulnerable to these deadly events. The research, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, used computer simulations to examine the impact of climate change on heatwaves in India over the next century.
The scientists found that under a business-as-usual scenario, with global temperatures rising by 2°C above pre-industrial levels, the number of oppressive heatwave days in India is expected to increase by nearly eightfold by the end of the century. An oppressive heatwave is defined as a period of high temperature and humidity that can be deadly for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and young children.
The study also found that the frequency and duration of heatwaves will increase, with the average heatwave lasting longer than 10 days by 2100. This prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures will put additional pressure on India’s healthcare system, which is already struggling to cope with the demands of a rapidly growing population.
One of the most alarming findings of the study was that the number of oppressive heatwave days in India under a 1.5°C warming scenario was still higher than the current average. This suggests that even if global temperatures are limited to an increase of just 1.5°C, heatwaves will continue to pose a significant threat to public health and safety.
The researchers used a combination of climate models and statistical techniques to analyze the data. They found that the impact of climate change on heatwaves in India is not uniform across the country, with certain regions such as the north-east being more prone to extreme temperatures than others.
Heatwaves are already a major problem in India, with thousands of people dying each year from heat-related illnesses. The Indian government has implemented various measures to mitigate the impact of heatwaves, including early warning systems and public awareness campaigns. However, more needs to be done to prepare for the increasing frequency and intensity of these deadly events.
The study’s findings highlight the urgent need for policymakers in India to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the changing climate. This could include investing in cooling infrastructure, developing heatwave early warning systems, and implementing public health campaigns to educate people on how to stay safe during heatwaves.
