Revolutionizing Task Allocation in Two-Sided Markets: A Customer-Led Approach

Thursday 13 March 2025

A new approach to allocating tasks in two-sided markets has been proposed, which could have significant implications for companies and customers alike. The traditional company-led Stackelberg game model, where companies set service prices and customers respond, struggles to accommodate diverse customer demands. In contrast, the new customer-led model puts customers in charge, allowing them to initiate tasks as leaders, while companies create strategies as followers.

This approach has been tested using satellite constellation services as a real-world case study. The results show that by giving customers more control over task allocation, companies can increase their revenues by up to 991% and reduce customer payments by up to 23%. This is because companies are able to complete more lucrative tasks and negotiate better prices with customers.

The new model also has implications for the way companies form teams. In traditional models, companies set team formation strategies based on factors such as task similarity and customer needs. However, in the customer-led model, companies must adapt their strategies to match the demands of individual customers. This requires a more flexible and responsive approach to team formation.

The researchers used a combination of game theory and experiments to test the new model. They found that by increasing the number of tasks, companies can increase their revenues even further, but only if they are able to form effective teams quickly enough to meet customer demands. The results also show that reducing the number of companies in the market can make it harder for customers to complete their tasks, leading to higher payment rates and lower revenue for companies.

One of the key benefits of the new model is its ability to accommodate diverse customer demands. In traditional models, companies must try to please all customers equally, which can be difficult if they have different needs and preferences. The customer-led model allows companies to tailor their services to individual customers, leading to higher satisfaction rates and increased loyalty.

The researchers believe that their findings could have significant implications for a range of industries, including logistics, healthcare, and finance. By giving customers more control over task allocation, companies can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations, leading to increased revenue and profitability. At the same time, customers can benefit from better services and lower prices.

Overall, the new customer-led model offers a fresh approach to allocating tasks in two-sided markets. By putting customers in charge and allowing them to initiate tasks as leaders, companies can increase their revenues and reduce customer payments.
