New Method for Calculating Complex Mathematical Functions

Thursday 20 March 2025

A new approach to calculating complex mathematical functions has been developed, allowing scientists to tackle problems that were previously thought to be insurmountable.

Lauricella functions are a type of hypergeometric function that appear in various areas of physics and mathematics. They describe the behavior of particles in quantum systems, among other things. However, these functions can be notoriously difficult to calculate, especially when they involve multiple variables.

The new method, developed by a team of researchers, uses a combination of analytical continuation and numerical evaluation to simplify the calculation process. Analytical continuation involves finding a way to extend the function’s definition to a larger region of the complex plane, while numerical evaluation involves using computers to approximate the function’s value at specific points.

By combining these two approaches, the researchers were able to develop an algorithm that can accurately calculate Lauricella functions with high precision. This is particularly useful for problems involving multiple variables, where traditional methods often become too complicated to handle.

The new method has already been tested on several examples and has shown promising results. For instance, it was used to calculate a family of two-loop non-planar master integrals that arise in the study of Higgs boson production in particle physics. These calculations are crucial for understanding the properties of the Higgs boson and other fundamental particles.

The researchers believe that their new method has far-reaching implications for many areas of science, including quantum field theory, number theory, and algebraic geometry. It could also be used to tackle problems in other fields, such as finance or computer science, where complex mathematical functions play a key role.

One of the advantages of the new method is its ability to handle high-dimensional integrals with ease. This is particularly important for problems involving multiple variables, where traditional methods often become too complicated to handle.

The researchers plan to continue developing and refining their algorithm in the coming years. They hope that it will eventually be used by scientists across a wide range of disciplines to tackle complex mathematical problems that were previously thought to be insurmountable.

The new method is not only important for its practical applications, but also for its potential to advance our understanding of mathematics itself. By developing more efficient and accurate methods for calculating complex functions, researchers can gain insights into the underlying structure of mathematics and potentially uncover new principles and patterns that have yet to be discovered.
