Solar-Powered IoT Infrastructure for Environmental Monitoring

The Internet of Things (IoT) is often touted as a revolution in connectivity, allowing devices to talk to each other and share information seamlessly. But what about when those devices are powered by the sun? A team of researchers has developed a novel system that combines solar power with advanced networking technology to create a self-sustaining IoT infrastructure for environmental monitoring.


The system, known as the Green Environmental Monitoring Network (Green EMN), is designed to monitor temperature, humidity, air quality, and noise levels in buildings. But what sets it apart from traditional IoT systems is its ability to harness energy from the sun, making it completely self-powered. The team achieved this by developing a sophisticated power management algorithm that adjusts the device’s energy usage based on available sunlight.


The Green EMN system consists of wireless solar routers (WSRs) that are strategically deployed throughout buildings to collect data and transmit it back to a central hub. Each WSR is equipped with a solar panel that generates electricity, which is then stored in a battery for later use. The power management algorithm ensures that the device consumes only as much energy as necessary, minimizing waste and extending its lifespan.


But what about security? With so many devices connected to the internet, concerns about hacking and data breaches are always top of mind. To address this, the team developed an innovative intrusion detection system (IDS) called ECHIDS. This system combines three different detection methods – signature-based, anomaly-based, and behavior-based – to provide comprehensive protection against cyber threats.


The Green EMN system is designed to be scalable and easy to deploy, making it ideal for use in large buildings or campuses. The team’s goal was to create a system that could be easily integrated into existing infrastructure, minimizing disruption and cost. By leveraging solar power and advanced networking technology, the Green EMN system offers a sustainable solution for environmental monitoring.
