A newly discovered open star cluster, known as UPK 220, has been shedding light on the formation and evolution of stars in our galaxy. The cluster, located about 12,000 light-years away, is thought to be around 1.5 billion years old, making it an ideal candidate for studying the early stages of star formation.
By analyzing the properties of variable stars within the cluster, astronomers have been able to determine its distance, age, metallicity, and reddening – crucial information that helps us understand how stars are born and live their lives. This data has been collected using a combination of observations from the Gaia space telescope and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).

The findings from UPK 220 are helping astronomers refine their understanding of how stars form and evolve within our galaxy. The results also highlight the importance of continued observations using space-based telescopes like Gaia and TESS, which provide unparalleled precision and coverage of the sky.
In addition to shedding light on star formation and evolution, the study has also provided valuable insights into the properties of open clusters themselves. For instance, the team found that UPK 220 is likely to be a relatively young cluster, with most stars still in their early stages of life.
