In recent years, our desire for seamless and high-quality video streaming has led to a surge in innovation in the field of interactive video streaming (IVS). The problem lies in the fact that IVS often struggles with delays, packet loss, and jitter buffer overflow, which can significantly impact the viewing experience. To address this issue, researchers have developed a novel pseudo-dual streaming algorithm called PDStream.
PDStream works by introducing a secondary stream that complements the primary video stream. This secondary stream, known as the playback stream, is designed to transmit non-keyframes in real-time, while the primary stream, which includes keyframes, transmits at a slower pace. By doing so, PDStream minimizes the delay caused by keyframe transmission and ensures a smoother viewing experience.
The algorithm’s design takes into account the unique characteristics of IVS traffic, where large keyframes can cause significant delays. To mitigate this issue, PDStream uses a priority-based transmission mechanism, which allocates higher priority to non-keyframes in the playback stream. This approach allows for faster transmission of non-keyframes and reduces the delay caused by keyframe transmission.
PDStream has been tested on various networks, including WiFi, 4G, and 5G connections, with impressive results. The algorithm was able to reduce average end-to-end delay by 17.5% and slash its 97th percentile delay by 33.3%. Additionally, PDStream maintained high video quality, with a significant reduction in stalling rates and packet loss.
The benefits of PDStream extend beyond just improved viewing experience. The algorithm’s design also enables more efficient use of network resources, reducing congestion and improving overall system performance. Furthermore, PDStream’s ability to adapt to changing network conditions makes it an attractive solution for real-world deployment.

The algorithm can be implemented on both video senders and servers, making it a versatile solution for various applications. This flexibility allows PDStream to be easily adapted to different use cases, such as telephony, conferencing, and live streaming.
