Predicting Compatibility: AI System Analyzes Conversations and Personalities

Friday 21 March 2025

A system that can predict how well you’ll get on with someone based on your personalities and conversation patterns has been developed by researchers in Japan.

The team, led by Kazuya Matsuo at NTT Corporation, used a combination of machine learning algorithms and natural language processing to create the system. They trained it on data from a large corpus of conversations between 625 Japanese pairs, and then tested its ability to predict the outcome of simulated dialogues between new partners.

The system works by analyzing the personalities and conversation patterns of each individual, using a range of psychological scales and questionnaires to gather information about their attitudes, values, and behaviors. It can then use this data to generate responses to conversational prompts, taking into account the personality traits and preferences of both individuals involved in the dialogue.

In tests, the system was able to predict with reasonable accuracy whether or not a simulated conversation between two strangers would lead to a positive outcome – such as the development of a romantic relationship. It was also able to generate responses that were more likely to elicit a positive reaction from the other person, by taking into account their personality and conversational style.

The researchers hope that the system could be used in the future to help people find compatible partners, or even to provide personalized dating advice. They also believe it could have applications in fields such as customer service, where understanding the personalities and communication styles of customers could help companies provide more effective support.

One potential limitation of the system is its reliance on a specific dataset of conversations between Japanese pairs – it may not be applicable to other cultures or languages without further training. However, the researchers believe that their approach could be adapted to work with different types of data, and they plan to investigate this further in future research.

Overall, the development of this system represents an important step forward in the field of human-computer interaction, and has the potential to have a significant impact on many areas of our lives.
