Researchers have made significant progress in developing a new method for generating high-resolution rainy images, which can be used to improve single-image rain removal models. The technique combines the benefits of rendering-based methods and learning-based methods to create large-scale high-quality paired rainy-clean image datasets.
The project begins with the creation of a High-Resolution Rainy Image (HRI) dataset, which contains realistic high-resolution paired rainy-clean images of multiple scenes and various illumination conditions. To generate these images, researchers employed a rendering-based method that simulates rain in 3D environments, taking into account factors such as raindrop size distribution, terminal velocity, and atmospheric conditions.
The next step involves using a High-Resolution Rainy Image Generation Network (HRIGNet), which is designed to introduce a guiding diffusion model in the Latent Diffusion Model. This approach provides additional guidance information for high-resolution image synthesis. The HRIGNet is trained on the HRI dataset and can generate realistic rainy images up to 2048×1024 resolution.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the new method, researchers conducted rain removal experiments on real datasets and found that it can help improve the robustness of deep derainers to real rainy images. This means that the model can better handle complex illumination conditions and various types of rain.
The researchers also explored the potential applications of their technique in fields such as computer vision, image processing, and robotics. They envision using high-resolution rainy images for tasks like object detection, tracking, and scene understanding under rainy conditions.
One of the key advantages of this method is its ability to generate realistic rainy images that can be used to train single-image rain removal models. This approach can help improve the performance of these models by providing them with more realistic and diverse training data.
The researchers also demonstrated the versatility of their technique by applying it to different scenarios, such as generating rainy images for various weather conditions and object types. They found that the model is capable of producing a wide range of realistic rainy images, making it a valuable tool for simulating real-world scenarios in computer vision applications.
Overall, this research has the potential to significantly advance our ability to generate high-resolution rainy images, which can be used to improve single-image rain removal models and enhance their performance in complex illumination conditions.
