A new approach to online group decision-making has been developed, one that uses artificial intelligence to facilitate discussions and reach consensus among participants. The system, called Parallel Thinking- based Facilitation Agent (PTFA), is designed to support complex decision-making processes by generating ideas, probing emotions, and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of suggestions.
The PTFA works by leveraging large language models (LLMs) to perform six distinct roles inspired by Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats technique. This approach allows the AI agent to engage with participants in a more human-like way, encouraging them to think creatively and critically about the topic at hand.
In a recent study, researchers tested the PTFA in 32 online discussions involving 48 participants. The results showed that the AI agent was able to make valuable contributions to the conversations, generating ideas, probing emotions, and analyzing suggestions. However, the study also highlighted some limitations of the system, including its tendency to dominate the discussion at times and struggle with timing its interventions.
Despite these challenges, the PTFA has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach online group decision-making. By providing a more structured and guided approach to discussions, the AI agent can help participants overcome common obstacles such as information overload and conflicting opinions.
The researchers behind the study hope that their work will contribute to a better understanding of how AI can be used to support human collaboration and decision-making. They believe that the PTFA could have far-reaching implications for fields such as business, politics, and education, where effective group decision-making is critical.
One potential application of the PTFA is in facilitating online discussions and consensus-building among diverse groups. This could be particularly useful in situations where people need to come together to make complex decisions, but may not have the opportunity to do so in person.
The development of the PTFA also highlights the growing importance of AI-powered tools in our personal and professional lives.
