Deceptive Design Patterns in Virtual Reality Games: A Qualitative Analysis of User Experiences

As Virtual Reality (VR) games continue to evolve, researchers are scrutinizing the ways in which game designers manipulate player behavior for their own benefit. A recent study published in the Companion Proceedings of the Annual Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction in Play (CHI PLAY Companion) sheds light on the prevalence of deceptive design patterns in commercial VR games.


The researchers employed an autoethnographic approach, where they played popular VR titles, including Moss2 and Beat Saber, while keeping a detailed diary of their experiences. This allowed them to identify and analyze the various tactics used by game designers to influence player behavior, such as creating artificial barriers to progress or exploiting psychological and emotional vulnerabilities.


One of the most insidious tactics identified was the use of social engineering, where games would manipulate players’ sense of urgency or social proof to prompt purchases or continued play. For instance, Moss2’s character design and narrative structure were designed to create a strong emotional connection with players, making them more likely to continue playing to see what happens next.


The study also found that many VR games employed deceptive design patterns similar to those seen in traditional computer-based games. These included manipulating choice architecture, such as presenting premium content or bundles in a way that made it seem like the best option, and using visual prominence to draw attention away from more expensive or less desirable options.


However, the researchers noted that some VR-specific features, such as 3D interaction and immersion, allowed for new forms of manipulation. For example, Beat Saber’s use of interactive feedback and lack of an in-game clock created a sense of deep engagement and timelessness, making it difficult for players to track their progress or take breaks.


The study’s findings have significant implications for the development of VR games and the ethics of game design. As VR technology continues to advance, it is essential that designers prioritize transparency and player agency to avoid exploiting players’ psychological and emotional vulnerabilities.


The researchers recommend developing ethical guidelines for VR game design, including provisions for clear and transparent pricing, minimal barriers to progress, and respectful treatment of player data. By adopting these principles, the VR gaming industry can ensure a more positive and sustainable experience for its players.


Ultimately, the study highlights the need for a nuanced understanding of how VR games manipulate player behavior and the importance of ethical design practices in this emerging medium. As VR continues to evolve, it is essential that designers prioritize transparency, respect, and player agency to create an enjoyable and trustworthy gaming experience.
