Unlocking the Secrets of Astronomical Spectroscopy: A New Python Pipeline for Manual Data Processing

A new pipeline for processing long-slit spectra, a type of data collected by astronomers to study celestial objects, has been developed. This pipeline, called PyLongslit, is designed to be simple and easy to use, making it an attractive option for researchers who want to process their own data without relying on automated systems.


One of the key features of PyLongslit is its ability to provide transparent and manual control over the processing steps. Unlike some other pipelines that rely on complex algorithms and mathematical models, PyLongslit allows users to visually inspect and adjust each step of the process. This makes it a great option for researchers who want to have more control over their data and are willing to invest time in learning how to use the pipeline.


PyLongslit is also designed to be instrument-independent, meaning that it can be used with a variety of different telescopes and instruments without requiring significant modifications. This makes it a versatile tool that can be used by researchers who work with different types of data.


The pipeline has been tested on data from two long-slit instruments: the Nordic Optical Telescope’s ALFOSC and the Gran Telescopio Canarias’ OSIRIS. The results show that PyLongslit is capable of producing high-quality spectra, comparable to those produced by more complex pipelines.


One of the limitations of PyLongslit is its simplicity. While this makes it easy to use, it also means that it may not be as precise as some other pipelines. However, for many researchers, the trade-off between ease of use and precision is worth it. After all, having control over the processing steps can be a powerful tool in the hands of an experienced researcher.


PyLongslit is available for download and has already been used by researchers at the Nordic Optical Telescope’s summer school to process data from their own observations. As more researchers begin to use the pipeline, we can expect to see even more innovative applications of this new technology.
