VertexRegen: A Novel Mesh Generation Framework for Real-Time 3D Model Creation

Friday 12 September 2025

Mesh generation, a crucial step in creating 3D models and assets for various industries such as film, design, and gaming, has long been a laborious process. Until now, most approaches have relied on autoregressive methods that generate meshes in a partial-to-complete manner, resulting in incomplete structures at intermediate steps.

A team of researchers from Meta Reality Labs has developed a novel mesh generation framework called VertexRegen, which enables the creation of meshes with a continuous level of detail. Unlike existing methods, VertexRegen produces valid meshes at each step of the generation process, offering anytime generation with varying levels of detail.

The key innovation behind VertexRegen lies in its reformulation of the mesh generation process as the reversal of edge collapse, or vertex split, learned through a generative model. This approach allows for the creation of high-quality meshes that are comparable to state-of-the-art methods while providing greater flexibility and control over the level of detail.

The framework consists of two primary components: a neural network-based generator and an optimization module. The generator produces a sequence of vertices and edges that define the mesh, while the optimization module ensures that the generated mesh is valid and meets specific quality criteria.

One of the most significant advantages of VertexRegen is its ability to produce meshes with varying levels of detail. This allows artists and designers to halt the generation process at any step to achieve the desired level of detail for their 3D models or assets. Additionally, the framework’s anytime generation capability enables users to iterate on their designs without having to start from scratch.

The researchers have demonstrated the effectiveness of VertexRegen through a series of experiments, showcasing its ability to produce high-quality meshes with varying levels of detail. The framework has also been tested on a range of datasets, including those featuring complex shapes and intricate details.

While VertexRegen is not a panacea for all mesh generation challenges, it represents a significant step forward in the field. By offering greater control over the level of detail and enabling anytime generation, the framework has the potential to streamline the 3D content creation process, making it more efficient and effective for artists, designers, and developers.

The implications of VertexRegen extend beyond the realm of mesh generation. As a generative model, the framework could be applied to other areas such as computer vision, robotics, and virtual reality, where the ability to create high-quality 3D models and assets is crucial.
