New DBD Plasma Actuator Generates Significantly More Force Than Previously Thought Possible

Friday 31 January 2025

In a breakthrough discovery, scientists have developed a new type of plasma actuator that can generate significantly more force than previously thought possible. These actuators, also known as dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators, are used to control airflow and improve aerodynamics in aircraft, wind turbines, and other applications.

The new DBD plasma actuator is designed with a unique configuration of electrodes and a special waveform that allows it to produce a much stronger electric field than previous designs. This strong electric field creates a powerful force that can be used to manipulate air flow and improve the efficiency of various systems.

One of the most significant advantages of this new DBD plasma actuator is its ability to generate high forces at relatively low voltages. This makes it possible to use the actuator in applications where power consumption is a concern, such as in small aircraft or wind turbines.

The researchers used advanced computer simulations and experiments to test the performance of their new DBD plasma actuator. They found that it was able to produce forces up to 251 millinewtons per meter (mN/m) at a voltage of just 40 kilovolts (kV). This is significantly higher than previous designs, which typically produced forces in the range of 10-50 mN/m.

The team also tested the actuator’s performance over a range of frequencies and found that it was able to produce maximum force at a frequency of around 2 kHz. They also discovered that the actuator’s efficiency increased as the number of DBD stages increased, making it possible to achieve even higher forces with multiple stages.

The potential applications of this new DBD plasma actuator are vast. It could be used to improve the aerodynamics of aircraft, wind turbines, and other systems by manipulating air flow and reducing drag. It could also be used in medical devices, such as ventilators or surgical instruments, where precise control over airflow is important.

Overall, this breakthrough discovery has significant implications for a wide range of industries and applications. The development of more powerful and efficient DBD plasma actuators could lead to improvements in efficiency, performance, and safety in many areas of technology.
