Modeling Circular Data with Weighted Likelihood Estimation

Sunday 02 February 2025

Circular data is a fascinating area of study that has numerous applications in various fields, such as biology, psychology, and medicine. When dealing with circular data, statisticians often face the challenge of modeling and analyzing complex patterns that arise from the inherent circular nature of the data.

One popular approach to model circular data is the von Mises distribution, which was introduced by Fisher in 1929. However, this distribution has some limitations, particularly when it comes to handling contamination or outliers in the data. In recent years, researchers have been developing new methods to address these issues and improve our understanding of circular data.

One such method is called weighted likelihood estimation (WLE), which was introduced by Agostinelli and Greco in 2019. WLE is a robust method that can handle contaminated or noisy data by down-weighting the influence of outliers on the estimation process. In this approach, the weights are based on a kernel density estimate of the underlying distribution.

Recently, researchers have extended WLE to the multivariate case, where they applied it to model complex circular patterns in high-dimensional data. The results showed that WLE can provide reliable estimates even when the data is contaminated with outliers or noisy measurements.

In addition to its robustness properties, WLE has several other advantages over traditional methods for modeling circular data. For example, it can handle multi-modal distributions and non-parametric models, making it a versatile tool for analyzing complex patterns in circular data.

To illustrate the power of WLE, researchers used real-world datasets from various fields, including biology and medicine. One such dataset was obtained from a study on protein torsion angles, which is an important area of research in bioinformatics. The results showed that WLE can uncover subtle patterns and structures in the data that would have been missed by traditional methods.

Another dataset used to demonstrate the effectiveness of WLE was obtained from a study on wind direction data. This dataset consisted of measurements taken at five different time occasions, and it presented a challenging problem for traditional methods due to its high dimensionality and potential contamination with outliers. However, WLE was able to provide reliable estimates of the underlying patterns in the data.

In summary, weighted likelihood estimation is a powerful method for modeling circular data that can handle contaminated or noisy data while providing reliable estimates of complex patterns. Its versatility and robustness make it an attractive tool for researchers working in various fields where circular data is present.
