Unlocking the Secrets of Ancient Celestial Bodies: New Light Curve Templates for RR Lyrae Stars

A team of astronomers has created the most extensive set of high-quality light curve templates for RR Lyrae stars, a crucial step in understanding these ancient celestial bodies. These templates will be invaluable for researchers studying the properties and behaviors of RR Lyrae stars, which are essential for mapping the structure and evolution of our galaxy.


RR Lyrae stars are a type of variable star that is found primarily in the outer regions of galaxies. They are known for their distinctive light curves, which show regular periods of brightness followed by sudden dips in luminosity. The new templates were created using data collected by the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the 4-meter Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. The templates are based on data collected from over 280 RR Lyrae stars, which were observed in multiple bands of light (griz) using DECam.
