Ukraine’s rich scientific heritage is often overlooked, but it has a proud tradition of producing some of the world’s most influential physicists. From the development of scintillating materials that are now used in particle detectors around the world to the work of pioneers like Lev Landau and Igor Tamm, Ukrainian scientists have made significant contributions to our understanding of the universe.
One of the most notable achievements is the discovery of quasi-classical theory of coherent radiation of channelled and over-barrier electrons and positrons in crystals. This research, conducted by a team of scientists at Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology (KIPT), has had far-reaching implications for our understanding of particle physics.
Another key centre of particle physics research in Ukraine is the Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics, which was established in Kyiv in 1966. This institute has been at the forefront of research in areas such as quantum field theory and statistical mechanics, and its scientists have made significant contributions to the ALICE detector at CERN.
Despite the challenges posed by war, Ukrainian scientists have continued to make important advances in their field. In fact, the number of publications by Ukrainian scientists did not drop significantly after the Russian invasion of 2022, thanks to support from the international community.
One way that Ukraine has been supported is through material assistance for scientists, which helps to minimize the brain drain and loss of infrastructure. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has also provided significant support, waiving Ukrainian financial contributions and allowing temporary free access to its publications and databases.
In addition, there are new expanded remote initiatives for Ukrainian researchers, including grants for researchers based in Ukraine to collaborate with non-Ukrainian institutes, as well as opportunities for students and teachers. This has the potential to expand intra-UKrainian collaborations and create important connections between scientists around the world.
Ukraine’s scientific community is also working closely with international partners to develop new technologies and projects. For example, CERN and Ukraine are collaborating on a project to develop a new luminometer for the LHCb detector at CERN, which will use scintillating materials developed in Kharkiv.
The story of Ukrainian scientists is one of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Despite the challenges posed by war, they continue to make important contributions to our understanding of the universe, and their work has far-reaching implications for fields such as particle physics and materials science.
