A team of scientists has made a significant discovery in the field of astronomy, shedding new light on the mysterious X-ray transients and variables in our galaxy.
Using data from the eROSITA telescope aboard the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) satellite, researchers have identified 304 sources that exhibit unusual X-ray activity. These objects are not associated with active galactic nuclei (AGN), which are known to be powerful sources of X-rays. Instead, they appear to be the result of short-lived events related to supermassive black hole accretion.
The scientists used a combination of optical and X-ray observations to study these transients and variables. They analyzed data from the Legacy Survey DR10 (LS10) and the eROSITA all-sky surveys (eRASS1 and eRASS2), as well as archival X-ray data. By combining these datasets, they were able to identify sources that exhibited significant changes in their X-ray brightness over time.
The researchers found that many of these transients and variables are located in the same regions of space as known star-forming galaxies. This suggests that they may be related to the formation of stars and the growth of supermassive black holes at the centers of these galaxies.
One of the most interesting findings is the discovery of a population of X-ray transients that are not associated with AGN. These objects appear to be the result of tidal disruption events (TDEs), which occur when a star passes too close to a supermassive black hole and is torn apart by the strong gravity.
The scientists also found evidence for quasi-periodic eruptions, which are thought to be caused by the accretion of material onto a supermassive black hole. These events can produce powerful X-ray outbursts that are visible from great distances.
The study provides new insights into the complex processes that govern the growth and evolution of galaxies. It also highlights the importance of combining data from multiple observatories to understand these phenomena.
In the future, scientists plan to continue studying these X-ray transients and variables using a variety of telescopes and instruments. This will help them better understand their origins and properties, as well as their role in shaping the evolution of galaxies over time.
