A collaborative effort between Norway and Poland has brought forth a significant step forward in the fight against climate change. The two nations have joined forces to create a network of carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure, aiming to reduce emissions from hard-to-abate industries.
The CCS technology involves capturing carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and industrial processes, followed by transportation and injection into geological formations for long-term storage. This approach has been recognized as crucial in the pursuit of net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Norwegian-Polish network will focus on leveraging their respective strengths to accelerate CCS deployment. Norway is renowned for its operational expertise demonstrated through landmark projects like Sleipner and Snøhvit, while Poland boasts significant geological CO2 storage potential estimated at over 15.5 gigatonnes.
This collaboration will enable the sharing of knowledge, resources, and best practices between the two nations. By fostering a bilateral relationship, they aim to create a scalable model for broader international cooperation in CCS development.
The implications are far-reaching, as this partnership has the potential to contribute significantly to the EU’s climate goals. The EU has set a target of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. By developing and deploying CCS technology, Norway and Poland can help achieve this ambitious goal.
Furthermore, this initiative may also pave the way for other countries to follow suit, creating a global network of CCS infrastructure that can effectively mitigate climate change.
The partnership has been made possible through the Norwegian Energy Partners (NORWEP) organization, which facilitates international cooperation in energy-related projects.
