SHARK-NIR: A Cutting-Edge Instrument for Exoplanet Research

Saturday 08 March 2025

The SHARK-NIR instrument, designed for the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), has made significant progress in its development and testing phase. This instrument aims to provide high-contrast imaging capabilities, allowing scientists to study exoplanets and their formation processes more effectively.

One of the major challenges faced by SHARK-NIR is the need to accurately align its coronagraphic masks. These masks are crucial for blocking out the light from the star, allowing the fainter planet to be detected. The instrument’s team has developed a novel approach to achieve this alignment, using phase diversity to sense the distortions caused by atmospheric turbulence.

The SHARK-NIR instrument also features an innovative software solution to prevent collisions between its motorized components. During testing, a potential collision issue emerged between the coronagraphic wheel and the fiber deployer. The team developed a software system that checks the position of the fiber deployer before allowing the coronagraphic wheel to move. This ensures safe operation and prevents any damage to the instrument.

Another significant achievement is the development of a web-based tool for generating and editing Observation Blocks (OBs). OBs are used to define the sequence of scripts and parameters required for automated operations, such as setting up the instrument and acquiring data. The new tool provides an intuitive interface for users to create and customize OBs, making it easier to operate the SHARK-NIR instrument.

The SHARK-NIR team has also worked on developing a global Instrument Control panel and Synoptic panel. These panels provide a visual representation of the instrument’s status, allowing operators to monitor its performance and make adjustments as needed. The Instrument Control panel exposes HTTP APIs for managing device movements and monitoring statuses, while the Synoptic panel offers a graphical overview of the instrument’s configuration.

The SHARK-NIR instrument is an important step towards understanding exoplanet formation and detection. Its innovative features and software solutions demonstrate the team’s commitment to developing cutting-edge technology. As the instrument prepares for its installation at the LBT, scientists are eagerly anticipating the new insights it will provide into the mysteries of our universe.

The SHARK-NIR instrument’s progress is a testament to the collaboration between scientists, engineers, and technicians working together to push the boundaries of astronomical research. With its unique features and capabilities, SHARK-NIR is poised to make significant contributions to our understanding of exoplanetary systems and the search for life beyond Earth.
