Unlocking Transparency: A Semi-Automated Approach to Managing Explanation Needs in User Reviews

Saturday 08 March 2025

The quest for transparency in software development has led researchers to explore new ways to explain complex systems to users. A recent study published by a team of researchers at Leibniz University Hannover and Graphmasters GmbH has shed light on this issue, proposing a semi-automated approach to manage explanation needs in user reviews.

The project focuses on the navigation app industry, where user reviews often contain requests for clarification or troubleshooting guidance. To address these needs, the researchers developed an automated system that uses word and phrase filtering to detect explanation needs in reviews. The system then assigns relevant internal teams or sources to provide responses, aiming to improve efficiency and accuracy.

The study’s authors expanded a taxonomy of explanation needs to include new categories such as Business and Meta Information, allowing for more precise categorization of user feedback. They also developed a hierarchical assignment strategy that prioritizes the most relevant teams, resulting in correct team assignments in 79.2% of cases.

One of the key findings is that while automation can greatly reduce manual workload, it’s not without its challenges. The researchers noted inconsistencies in detecting taxonomy categories using word filters and difficulties in assigning reference points to explanation needs. However, these issues did not significantly impact the overall effectiveness of the system.

The study also highlights the importance of addressing user explanation needs as a non-functional requirement in software development. By providing clear and concise explanations for complex systems, developers can improve user satisfaction and ensure product success.

In practical terms, the proposed approach could be applied to various industries where user feedback is essential, such as e-commerce or customer support services. The system’s ability to detect explanation needs and assign relevant resources could streamline response times and enhance overall customer experience.

While this study focuses on a specific domain, its implications extend beyond navigation apps. As software development becomes increasingly complex, the need for transparency and clarity in user interactions is becoming more pressing. This research offers valuable insights into how developers can better address user needs and improve their products through more effective explanation mechanisms.

The team’s next steps will focus on refining the taxonomy, exploring the use of artificial intelligence to further automate the process, and enhancing the system’s ability to identify both reference points and sources with minimal manual intervention. As researchers continue to push the boundaries of explainability in software development, this study serves as a crucial stepping stone towards more transparent and user-friendly systems.
