AI-Powered Writing Tool Shows Promising Results in Pilot Study

A new tool is being tested in classrooms that uses artificial intelligence to help students improve their writing skills. The system, called CGScholar AI Helper, provides instant feedback on students’ work, highlighting areas where they need to improve and suggesting ways to do so.


The tool was developed by researchers at the University of Illinois who wanted to create a way for teachers to give personalized feedback to students in a timely manner. Traditionally, teachers have relied on grading papers one by one, which can be time-consuming and may not provide the level of detail that students need to improve their writing.


CGScholar AI Helper uses machine learning algorithms to analyze student writing and identify areas where they are struggling. The system then provides feedback in the form of ratings and comments, suggesting ways for the student to improve their work.


In a pilot study, researchers tested the tool with 11th-grade students who were tasked with writing a paragraph analyzing the similarities between two texts. The results showed that students who used the AI Helper improved their writing skills significantly more than those who did not use it.


One of the key benefits of the system is its ability to provide instant feedback. This allows students to make changes to their work and resubmit it, receiving additional feedback and guidance as they work towards improving their writing.


The researchers also found that the AI Helper was particularly effective at helping students who were struggling with specific aspects of writing, such as identifying similarities between texts or making clear arguments.


While the results are promising, there is still much to be learned about how best to use the AI Helper in classrooms. The researchers plan to continue testing and refining the tool to ensure that it is effective and easy to use for teachers and students alike.
