LAMOST-MRS-O Survey Reveals Insights into Open Clusters and the Evolution of the Milky Way

For decades, scientists have been studying open clusters, large groups of stars that formed together at the same time in the distant past. By analyzing the properties of these clusters, researchers can gain valuable insights into the formation and evolution of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Recently, a team of astronomers has made significant progress in this area by conducting a comprehensive survey of medium-resolution spectra for over 100 open clusters.


The LAMOST- MRS-O (Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope) survey aimed to acquire high-precision radial velocities and stellar parameters for the member stars of these clusters. By combining these data with distance and proper motion information from Gaia, the team was able to create a detailed 3D spatial map of each cluster. This allowed them to identify accurate membership lists and study the internal dynamics and structure of the clusters.


One of the most exciting findings of this survey is the discovery of large deviations in the abundance measurements of hot stars within certain clusters. These deviations suggest that these stars may have undergone significant changes during their evolution, such as mass loss or internal mixing processes. By studying these variations, scientists can gain a better understanding of the complex physical processes at play in the formation and evolution of open clusters.


Another key result of this survey is the construction of highly accurate color-magnitude diagrams for many of the studied clusters. These diagrams are essential tools for understanding the age, distance, and chemical composition of each cluster. By analyzing these diagrams, researchers can identify the most likely evolutionary stages of individual stars within the cluster and determine the overall properties of the cluster itself.


The LAMOST-MRS-O survey has also shed new light on the kinematic properties of open clusters. By studying the proper motion and radial velocity data for member stars, scientists were able to infer the internal dynamics of each cluster, including its rotation rate and degree of relaxation. This information is crucial for understanding how these clusters have evolved over time and how they interact with their surrounding environments.


The survey’s findings also have important implications for our understanding of the Milky Way galaxy as a whole. By studying the properties of open clusters, researchers can gain insights into the formation and evolution of the galaxy, including its chemical enrichment history and spiral structure. The detailed data collected by LAMOST-MRS-O will be an invaluable resource for scientists in the years to come.
