Breakthrough in Wireless Image Transmission: Removing Blur through Event-Driven Coding

Sunday 09 March 2025

Researchers have made a significant breakthrough in developing a system that can transmit images through wireless communication channels while also removing blur caused by camera shake or motion. The system, known as Event-Driven Joint Source-Channel Coding (EV-JSCC), uses events from an event camera to help deblur the image at the receiver.

Event cameras are unique because they capture changes in brightness rather than capturing individual frames like traditional cameras. This allows them to detect even slight movements and can be used to create a more accurate representation of what is happening in the scene. In this case, the events from the event camera are used to help remove blur caused by camera shake or motion.

The EV-JSCC system consists of several components that work together to transmit images through wireless channels while also removing blur. The first component is the event encoder, which converts the events from the event camera into a format that can be transmitted over the wireless channel. The second component is the image encoder, which compresses the original image using techniques such as JPEG or Wavelet compression.

The two encoders are then combined and transmitted over the wireless channel to the receiver. At the receiver, the received signals are processed by a deblurring decoder that uses the events from the event camera to help remove blur caused by camera shake or motion.

The EV-JSCC system has several advantages over traditional image transmission systems. For one, it can transmit images at much higher rates than traditional systems because it only transmits the necessary information to reconstruct the image. This means that it can be used in situations where there is limited bandwidth available.

Additionally, the EV-JSCC system is more resistant to errors caused by noise or interference on the wireless channel. Because it uses events from the event camera to help remove blur, it can still produce high-quality images even if some of the transmitted information is lost or corrupted during transmission.

The researchers tested the EV-JSCC system using a dataset of images captured with an event camera and then blurred using software. They found that the system was able to accurately remove blur caused by camera shake or motion and produce high-quality images at much higher rates than traditional image transmission systems.

Overall, the EV-JSCC system is an important breakthrough in image transmission technology because it allows for faster and more reliable transmission of images through wireless channels while also removing blur caused by camera shake or motion. This has many potential applications in fields such as medicine, surveillance, and entertainment.
