Qubit Touchdown: A Game-Changing Approach to Teaching Quantum Computing

A new board game has emerged that’s aiming to demystify quantum computing for high school students, and it’s already showing promising results.


Qubit Touchdown is a competitive game that teaches players about the principles of quantum mechanics through a simplified, football-themed interface. The game was developed by Thomas G. Wong, a physics teacher from Creighton University, who set out to create an engaging way for his students to learn about this complex and often intimidating subject.


The game is played on a rectangular board with six possible positions, each representing a different state of a quantum bit (qubit). Players take turns rolling a die to determine how many spaces they can move their token, which represents the qubit. The goal is to score touchdowns by landing on specific positions that correspond to the principles of quantum mechanics.


The game’s simplicity belies its depth, as players must understand concepts like superposition, entanglement, and measurement to succeed. Wong’s design uses analogies and visual aids to help students grasp these abstract ideas, making it an effective tool for teaching quantum computing.


In a recent study, 107 high school students from Precalculus, AP Statistics, and AP Physics classes played Qubit Touchdown as part of a research project. The results were striking: after playing the game, students reported increased confidence in their ability to learn about quantum computing, with self-efficacy scores rising by an average of 33.4%. Students also found the game enjoyable and easy to learn.


The study’s findings suggest that Qubit Touchdown has the potential to be a valuable resource for educators looking to introduce students to quantum computing. By making this complex subject more accessible, Wong’s game could help inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers who might not have otherwise been interested in pursuing these fields.
