Journalists in Nigeria’s South East region are struggling to effectively communicate with sources and gather information, a new study has found. Despite having access to Google Translate, many journalists in this region are not utilizing the tool to its full potential.
Researchers surveyed over 280 journalists in the region and found that while most were aware of Google Translate, only about one-third had used it for their work. Of those who had used it, many reported doing so infrequently or only when forced to due to language barriers.
The study suggests that poor internet connectivity, power outages, and a lack of knowledge on how to use the tool effectively are major obstacles to its adoption among journalists in the region. Many respondents also cited the high cost of data and airtime as a significant barrier to using Google Translate offline.
The findings highlight the challenges faced by journalists in Nigeria’s South East region, where over 500 languages are spoken and many people do not speak English fluently. The region is home to several major cities, including Enugu and Aba, and is a hub for news and media organizations.
Despite these challenges, researchers believe that Google Translate has the potential to greatly improve communication between journalists and sources in the region. By providing access to accurate and timely translations, Google Translate can help journalists gather more information and tell more nuanced stories about the people and communities they cover.
To overcome the obstacles facing journalists in the region, researchers are calling for increased awareness of Google Translate’s capabilities and benefits. They also recommend that media organizations and journalism training programs provide additional support and resources to help journalists master the tool.
Furthermore, developers of Google Translate should consider updating the app with features that address the specific needs of journalists working in regions like Nigeria’s South East. This could include offline mode improvements, language packs for less common languages spoken in the region, and tutorials on how to use the tool effectively.
The study’s findings have important implications for journalism in Nigeria’s South East region and beyond. By addressing the barriers to Google Translate adoption among journalists, researchers hope to improve communication and storytelling in regions where language barriers can be significant obstacles.
