Efficient DIY Irrigation System Developed by West Valley College Researchers

A DIY irrigation system that’s both efficient and easy on the wallet has been developed by a team of researchers at West Valley College in California. The automated water delivery system is designed to optimize plant care by monitoring soil moisture levels and providing just the right amount of hydration.


The project, which was presented at a recent conference, uses a capacitive soil moisture sensor to track the level of moisture in the soil. This information is then fed into an ADC (analog-to-digital converter) that converts the analog signal into a digital value readable by a Raspberry Pi microcontroller. The system also includes a relay module that controls the flow of water from a pump, allowing it to dispense just the right amount of water to keep the soil at optimal levels.


The researchers claim that their system is more efficient than traditional irrigation methods because it only waters plants when they need it, reducing waste and conserving resources. The system also includes a user-friendly interface that allows users to monitor moisture levels and control watering remotely through a web-based interface.


One of the key features of this system is its use of a capacitive soil moisture sensor, which provides more accurate readings than traditional resistive sensors. This is because the capacitance of a capacitor changes depending on the material between its plates, so by measuring these changes, the sensor can accurately track the level of moisture in the soil.


The researchers also developed an algorithm to determine when watering is needed based on the moisture levels read from the sensor and other environmental factors such as temperature. This ensures that plants receive just the right amount of water, without overwatering or underwatering them.


The system has been tested in a variety of environments, including small gardens and large-scale farms, and has shown promising results. The researchers are now looking to further refine the system and make it more user-friendly for everyday use.
