Unveiling the Secrets of Antares: A Study of a Red Supergiant Stars Inner Workings

For five years, astronomers have been monitoring the star Antares, one of the brightest and most massive in our galaxy. The results are fascinating – a complex pattern of oscillations that could reveal secrets about the star’s inner workings.


Antares is a red supergiant, meaning it is nearing the end of its life. It’s already shed much of its outer layers, leaving behind a dense core that will eventually collapse into a black hole or neutron star. But before it does, astronomers want to learn as much as they can about what makes Antares tick.


The team used a telescope at the University of Los Andes in Colombia to study Antares’ radial velocity – how fast its surface is moving towards or away from us. They took 580 spectra over five years, which allowed them to detect a pattern of oscillations with periods ranging from a few months to six years.


One of the most intriguing findings was a 175-day oscillation that could be related to Antares’ internal dynamics. This is similar to what’s seen in other stars, but the team believes it might be linked to convection currents deep within the star. These currents can affect the surface velocity and even influence the star’s overall structure.


The researchers also detected a six-year oscillation, which is consistent with previous observations. However, they found that the amplitude of this oscillation has decreased over time, suggesting that Antares’ internal energy source might be dwindling.


Another interesting aspect of Antares is its hydrogen-alpha line profile. This line is sensitive to changes in the star’s surface layers and can reveal information about convection patterns and mass loss. The team found that the core of this line is shifted blueward, which could indicate a rich stellar wind blowing away from the star.


The study also highlighted the importance of monitoring Antares’ velocity over long periods. This allows scientists to detect subtle changes in the star’s behavior, which can provide valuable insights into its internal workings.


The findings from this research have significant implications for our understanding of massive stars like Antares. By studying these giants, astronomers can gain a better grasp of how they evolve and eventually explode as supernovae, leaving behind either black holes or neutron stars.


As the team continues to monitor Antares, they hope to uncover more secrets about its inner workings. With each new observation, scientists can refine their models and gain a deeper understanding of these massive, complex stars.
