For example, the Parent in Science initiative aims to support parents who are also scientists, providing resources and networking opportunities specifically designed for this group. Similarly, the Mulheres na Ciência project uses social media platforms to promote women in science, highlighting their achievements and providing a platform for them to share their stories.
These initiatives can have a significant impact on increasing diversity and inclusion in science. By providing support and resources, they can help to create a more inclusive environment that is welcoming to people from all backgrounds. They can also help to address the unconscious biases that can affect hiring decisions and promotions.
But it’s not just about creating programs and initiatives. It’s also about changing the culture of science itself. This means recognizing the value of diversity and inclusion, and making them a priority in research institutions and universities.
One way to do this is by promoting more diverse representation in scientific images and illustrations. For too long, these images have been dominated by white men, reinforcing stereotypes and perpetuating a lack of diversity.
