Novel Precoding Scheme Reduces Peak-to-Average Power Ratio in Orthogonal Time-Frequency Space Modulation

Tuesday 11 March 2025

A team of researchers has developed a new method for reducing the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation, which is used in wireless communication systems. PAPR is an important metric that affects the performance and efficiency of these systems.

In traditional OFDM-based systems, PAPR can be reduced using various techniques such as clipping and filtering, companding, and DFT-precoding. However, these methods may not be suitable for OTFS modulation due to its unique characteristics.

The researchers propose a novel approach that involves precoding the information symbols with an extended alphabet set. This precoding scheme allows for more flexibility in modifying the amplitude of the symbols, which can lead to better PAPR reduction.

The proposed method was tested using simulations and compared with other state-of-the-art methods. The results show that the new approach significantly reduces PAPR, achieving a 5 dB improvement over the uncompensated system. Additionally, the error rate performance of OTFS systems with the proposed compensation method is similar to that of other considered state-of-the-art methods and is invariant for a large range of channel Doppler shifts.

The researchers also investigated the effects of varying parameters such as modulation order, number of subcarriers, and sampling rate on PAPR. They found that the proposed method performs well over a wide range of these parameters, making it a versatile solution for various wireless communication applications.

In summary, the new precoding scheme offers a promising solution for reducing PAPR in OTFS modulation, which is essential for efficient transmission and reception of data in wireless communication systems.
