Stellar Impact: Creative Arts Boost Girls Confidence and Enthusiasm for STEM Fields

Rising Stargirls, a program aimed at increasing girls’ interest in astronomy and science, has released new research showing that its creative arts-based approach can significantly boost young women’s confidence and enthusiasm for STEM fields.


The study, which analyzed data from six workshops run by Rising Stargirls, found that participants showed significant increases in engagement with science and development of a science identity over the course of the program. The researchers used pre- and post-surveys to assess changes in participants’ attitudes towards science and their own abilities.


One of the key findings was that girls who participated in Rising Stargirls workshops reported talking more frequently about science with their families and friends, and were more excited to take science classes in school after completing the program. This suggests that the creative arts-based approach used by Rising Stargirls is effective in encouraging girls to share their newfound passion for science with others.


The study also found that participants believed they could do well in science more strongly after participating in the workshops, and saw themselves as scientists. This increased confidence in their abilities was a significant predictor of future engagement with science.


Rising Stargirls’ approach is unique in that it combines traditional astronomy education with creative arts activities, such as writing, drawing, and filmmaking. The program aims to make science more accessible and engaging for young women by allowing them to express themselves through art.


The researchers suggest that the increased confidence and enthusiasm seen in participants may be due to the program’s ability to provide girls with a sense of agency and control over their learning experience. By giving girls the freedom to explore scientific concepts through creative means, Rising Stargirls may be helping them develop a stronger connection to science and a greater sense of self-efficacy.


The study’s findings have important implications for education policymakers and practitioners seeking to increase diversity in STEM fields. By incorporating creative arts-based approaches into their teaching methods, educators may be able to better engage young women and help them develop the confidence and enthusiasm needed to pursue careers in science.


While more research is needed to fully understand the impact of Rising Stargirls on long-term outcomes, these initial findings suggest that the program’s innovative approach has the potential to make a significant difference in the lives of young women. By providing girls with a fun and creative way to learn about science, Rising Stargirls may be helping to break down barriers and pave the way for more diverse and talented scientists in the future.
