Researchers have made significant progress in understanding how learners approach online educational videos, shedding light on the complexities of questioning and engagement. A new dataset, known as YouLeQD, has been created to analyze learner-posed questions from YouTube lecture video comments. This comprehensive study delves into the cognitive complexity of these questions, using Bloom’s Taxonomy to categorize them.
The findings suggest that learners’ questions are not always straightforward, often combining multiple levels of cognition. For instance, a question may require both recall and analysis skills. These complex questions can be attributed to the diverse range of learning styles and approaches adopted by students.
To better comprehend these complexities, researchers developed two classification models using large language models like RoBERTa. These models were trained on YouLeQD data to detect questions and analyze their cognitive complexity. The results show that learners’ questions are often nuanced, reflecting a deep understanding of the material.
The study also highlights the importance of questioning in online educational settings. Learners use questions to clarify doubts, seek feedback, and engage with instructors. This interactive approach fosters a sense of community, encouraging collaboration and discussion among peers.
