A new approach to research and development is gaining traction in industry-academia collaborations, with promising results in delivering innovative solutions quickly and efficiently. Lean R&D, a methodology that combines agile software development principles with traditional research methods, has been successfully applied in projects with major companies such as Petrobras and Americanas.
The key to Lean R&D’s success lies in its ability to iterate rapidly through different phases of the project, from defining business hypotheses to delivering minimal viable products (MVPs). This approach allows researchers to quickly test and validate their ideas, making it easier to adapt to changing requirements and priorities. In contrast to traditional research methods, which often focus on long-term goals without immediate industry impact, Lean R&D prioritizes short-cycle development that can deliver tangible results in a matter of months.
One notable example is the project with Petrobras, where Lean R&D was used to develop AI-driven solutions for improving energy efficiency in oil refineries. The approach enabled researchers to quickly identify and test new ideas, leading to the delivery of MVPs that could be rolled out on a larger scale. The results were impressive, with ROI exceeding 20 times the investment in the project.
Another significant advantage of Lean R&D is its ability to involve diverse stakeholders throughout the development process. In the Americanas project, students and researchers from PUC-Rio worked closely together to develop innovative solutions for managing physical stores and improving logistic operations. This collaboration not only fostered a deeper understanding of industry needs but also provided valuable training opportunities for students.
Lean R&D’s adaptability is another key factor in its success. The approach can be tailored to fit the specific requirements of each project, allowing researchers to pivot quickly in response to changing priorities or new information. This flexibility is particularly important in fast-paced industries where market conditions can shift rapidly.
While Lean R&D is still a relatively new approach, its potential to transform industry-academia collaborations is significant. By prioritizing short-cycle development and involving diverse stakeholders throughout the process, researchers can deliver innovative solutions that meet real-world needs quickly and efficiently. As the methodology continues to evolve and spread, it will be interesting to see how it shapes the future of research and development in various industries.
