AI, Privacy, and Young Users: A Study on Stakeholder Perspectives

Thursday 13 March 2025

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems into technologies used by young digital citizens has raised significant privacy concerns. A recent study investigated these concerns through a comparative analysis of stakeholder perspectives, surveying over 250 participants and focusing on the views of parents/educators and AI professionals.

The findings suggest that education and awareness play a crucial role in shaping data ownership and risk assessment among young users. In other words, when children are taught about the importance of privacy and how to protect their personal data, they are more likely to feel in control of their online presence and less concerned about potential risks.

Another key discovery is that data ownership and control have a significant impact on transparency and trust. When individuals feel they have agency over their own data, they are more likely to trust the organizations collecting and storing it. This highlights the need for user-centric privacy controls and targeted educational initiatives to empower young users with the skills to make informed decisions about their online activities.

Interestingly, the study found that perceived risks and benefits of AI systems had a minimal influence on parental data sharing. This suggests that other factors, such as social norms or cultural values, may play a more significant role in shaping parents’ attitudes towards sharing their children’s personal data.

The results also underscore the importance of transparency in AI design and governance. When organizations are open about how they collect and use user data, individuals are more likely to trust them with this information. This highlights the need for companies to adopt transparent practices and communicate effectively with users about data collection and usage.

In addition to highlighting the need for education and awareness, the study emphasizes the importance of incorporating diverse stakeholder perspectives into AI design and governance. By considering the views of parents, educators, and professionals in the field, policymakers and industry leaders can develop more effective strategies for balancing innovation with robust privacy protections.

The findings of this study have significant implications for the development of AI systems that prioritize user privacy and trust. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, it is essential to prioritize transparency, education, and awareness to ensure that these technologies are designed and used in a way that respects and protects individuals’ rights to privacy.
