A new approach has been proposed to detect dark matter, a mysterious substance that makes up about 27% of our universe but has yet to be directly observed. The method involves using magnetic fields generated by electric currents in the Earth’s outer core to convert dark matter into photons, which could then be detected by magnetometers on the surface.
The idea is based on the concept of millicharged particles, hypothetical particles that are thought to have a tiny electric charge similar to that of an electron. These particles would interact with magnetic fields and could potentially be converted into photons through a process known as annihilation.
By analyzing the Earth’s magnetic field data, scientists have been able to identify regions where the field is strongest, which could indicate areas where dark matter is most likely to be present. They have also developed a model of the magnetic field generated by electric currents in the Earth’s outer core, which would be used to convert dark matter into photons.
The detection method relies on the conversion of dark matter into photons through annihilation with the magnetic field. This process would create a unique signature that could be detected by magnetometers on the surface. The scientists have developed an algorithm to identify this signature and determine whether it is caused by dark matter or other natural phenomena.
The proposed method has several advantages over other detection methods, including its ability to detect dark matter in the Earth’s outer core, which is thought to be a significant source of dark matter. Additionally, the method does not require the construction of expensive underground detectors, making it more accessible and cost-effective.
While this approach is still in its early stages, it has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of dark matter and could potentially lead to new discoveries about the nature of the universe.
