Predictive System Identifies High-Risk Patients for Chronic Diseases

Saturday 15 March 2025

A team of researchers has developed a novel system that can predict the risk of developing multiple chronic diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease, and heart disease, up to one year in advance. The system uses routine electronic health records (EHRs) to identify patients at high risk of developing these conditions.

The researchers trained machine learning models on EHR data from thousands of patients, using features such as demographics, vital signs, diagnoses, medications, and social history. They found that the models were able to predict the risk of chronic disease development with a high degree of accuracy, even when the patients did not yet show any symptoms.

The system is designed to be used in real-world clinical settings, where it can help doctors identify patients who are at high risk of developing chronic diseases and take preventive measures to reduce that risk. For example, if a doctor knows that a patient is at high risk of developing hypertension, they may be able to recommend lifestyle changes or medications to reduce the risk.

The researchers also developed an explainable AI system that can provide doctors with insights into why the model made a particular prediction. This can help doctors understand what factors are contributing to a patient’s high risk of chronic disease development and make more informed decisions about treatment.

One of the key advantages of this system is its ability to integrate with existing EHR systems, making it easy for doctors to use in their daily practice. The researchers also plan to expand the system to cover even more chronic diseases and develop it further to make it even more accurate and useful.

This type of predictive medicine has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by enabling doctors to take preventive measures that can reduce the risk of chronic disease development and improve patient outcomes. By identifying patients at high risk early on, doctors can intervene earlier, reducing the need for costly treatments and improving overall health outcomes.
