Quality Assurance Strategy for Ultra-High Dose Rate Proton Therapy

Thursday 20 March 2025

Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland have made significant strides in developing a quality assurance strategy for ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) proton therapy, a novel approach that could revolutionize cancer treatment.

The challenge of delivering UHDR treatments lies in ensuring accurate and safe delivery of high-energy protons to tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. To achieve this, the researchers designed an in-house QA phantom that allows them to evaluate spot positioning, beam size, and dose rate with unprecedented precision.

Their approach involves a five-spot pattern delivered to assess spot placement and beam size, followed by a second delivery with corrected spot positions to confirm results. The team also developed a comprehensive protocol for dosimetric evaluation, including dose rate calculations from log files, which enables them to reconstruct the delivered dose and dose rate.

The researchers used this QA strategy to test their clinical pencil beam scanning proton therapy unit, delivering UHDR treatments to a phantom designed specifically for this purpose. Their findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the QA protocol in ensuring accurate delivery of high-energy protons.

One of the key innovations is the use of a micro diamond detector to measure dose rates during treatment. This device allows for time-resolved measurements, enabling researchers to reconstruct the delivered dose and dose rate with unprecedented precision.

The team’s work has significant implications for the development of UHDR proton therapy, which could potentially reduce treatment times and improve patient outcomes. The success of this QA strategy demonstrates the importance of rigorous testing and validation in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of high-energy treatments.

As researchers continue to explore the potential of UHDR proton therapy, their findings will likely pave the way for more widespread adoption of this innovative approach. With its potential to revolutionize cancer treatment, it’s clear that the future of radiation oncology is bright indeed.
