Automated Speech Recognition Technology Enhances Remote Healthcare Interpreting Quality

A recent study has shed light on the potential benefits of using automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology in remote healthcare interpreting, a field that is becoming increasingly important as medical services become more globalized.


Interpreters play a crucial role in facilitating communication between patients and healthcare providers who speak different languages. However, this process can be challenging, particularly when it comes to complex medical terminology and nuances of language. ASR technology has the potential to alleviate some of these challenges by providing interpreters with real-time transcriptions of spoken language.


Researchers conducted a pilot study to investigate the impact of ASR on interpreting quality in remote healthcare settings. The study involved four trainee interpreters who were given scripted medical consultations to interpret, with varying levels of ASR support provided. For example, when interpreting a doctor’s explanation of a patient’s test results, an interpreter with full ASR support was able to convey the information more accurately than one without it.


The study also found that interpreters were selective in how they used ASR output, often relying on it for specific phrases or terminology rather than relying solely on the technology. This suggests that ASR can be a useful tool, but should not replace human interpretation entirely.


While the study had some limitations, such as a small sample size and a controlled environment, its findings have important implications for the field of remote healthcare interpreting. As medical services continue to globalize, the need for accurate and effective communication between patients and providers will only increase.


The use of ASR technology could be particularly beneficial in situations where interpreters are not readily available or where complex medical terminology is involved. However, it is also important to recognize that ASR should be used as a tool to support human interpretation, rather than replacing it entirely.


Overall, the study suggests that ASR has the potential to improve the quality of remote healthcare interpreting, particularly in situations where complex medical terminology is involved.
