Low-Cost Vacuum Generation System for Educational Purposes

Scientists have developed a low-cost and portable vacuum generation system that can create a vacuum level of up to 26 inches of mercury in an environment with an atmospheric pressure of 28.5 inches of mercury. This device is designed for educational purposes, allowing students to demonstrate the properties of a vacuum chamber without needing expensive equipment.


The system uses a common air conditioning compressor that has been inverted to function as a vacuum pump. The compressor is connected to a gas-tight container or chamber, which can be sealed and evacuated by the compressor. A gasket made from an old car tire tube provides a flexible seal for the chamber.


The device was tested with three experiments designed to demonstrate the properties of a vacuum chamber. In one experiment, cold boiling or cavitation was demonstrated by heating water in a container placed inside the vacuum chamber until it boiled at a lower temperature than normal due to the reduced pressure.


In another experiment, the volume increase under vacuum was shown by placing a party balloon and a squeezed plastic water bottle inside the chamber. The balloon expanded as the air inside was released into the atmosphere, while the water bottle increased in size as the air inside was compressed.


The third experiment demonstrated that sound waves cannot travel through a vacuum, but electromagnetic waves such as radio signals can pass through without being affected by the lack of air molecules. This was achieved by placing a bicycle horn and a mobile phone inside the chamber and observing how they functioned.


The device is designed to be portable and easy to assemble, making it an ideal tool for science education. The authors suggest that it could be used in schools or universities to teach students about vacuum properties and principles of thermodynamics.


The development of this low-cost vacuum generation system highlights the importance of innovation in science education. By providing affordable and accessible equipment, scientists can inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists who are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle complex problems in various fields.
